Fifth Post: Bluford High, The Bully by Paul Langan (Chapter 5)

In Chapter 5, Darell starts his PE class. His PE teacher, Mr. Dooling made him stand up in front of the class to introduce him. As soon as Darell stood up he received negative comments that he did not want. One kid said "Man, that boy looks like he should join the wrestling team. He could be the practice dummy." Other kids started to chuckle at the comment. Mr. Dooling announced an assignment for the class. The assignment was to jog at your own pace, loop around the track four times, and run back inside. After the school day was over, he did have Amberlynn approach him and talk to him, which was a good feeling for him. When he got home, one of Uncle Jason's kids were crying. It was Nate, the younger brother of Travis. Nate was crying because Travis broke his toy car. Since Travis was bigger and older than Nate, he thought he could do whatever he wanted to. Darell knew exactly what Nate was feeling.

Soon Darell ran to the supermarket to get some oranges, and while returning back home, he ran into Tyray and his gang. The gang started to push Darell around, and then Tyray asked him if he had any money on him. Darell replied by told Tyray that he had just spent his money on the oranges. Tyray entered his pocket, took out a knife, and stabbed the bag, letting the oranges escape from the bag. Darell tried frantically to pick up the oranges quickly, but Tyray and his "boys" started to stomp on the oranges before he was able to pick them up. "Next time you better have cash for me, hear? Tomorrow morning, I'll be waiting right in front of the supermarket. You better be there," Tyray replied before leaving.

Personal Thoughts: As explained in my last post, I still understand the predicament that Darell is in, but giving away your mother's hard earned money to somebody like Tyray, is going above the limit. I would have had to draw the line there.

  1. Bullying has become a hot topic lately. I've heard that schools are starting to put in place anti bullying programs to help prevent kids from being targeted and curb the bullying behavior. I think it will really make a difference in schools.
